The end of the local immersion and the start of exams!

From L to R ( Megan, Grace and Eden)

The local school immersion had concluded successfully and the 3 girls in my class sure had lots of fun in the process too. I am sure there are a lot of intangibles that can be learnt from this trip. I am sure the mummies and daddies also gain something fruitful from this trip as well knowing that their daughters are strong survivors.

I suppose everyone is in the midst of mugging for their exams. I am sure everyone is pushing hard at this very minute and Mr Low would like to wish everyone good luck for the coming exams!! = )

All that's been happening lately

Hello Everyone, sorry I had been busy lately and didn't have much time to post in our class blog. Well had fell sick when I returned from Shanghai and had been busy with the Science Nova week lately. Well a lot of things have been happening in School lately and just thought I did share with everyone. Firstly we celebrated International Friendship Day. We are really fortunate to have so many guest who gave a show and tell session to the pupils. The information was really useful and it allowed us to understand other people's culture better.

Some of the different interesting costumes

As your would have know by now, the school introduced the local immersion for the first time this year. Pupils get to stay at Nanyang Girls High hostel for a good 20 days. Everyday they will go school and after that they will return to NYGH's hostel to stay before going to school the following day. Over the weekend, they will have different exciting activities. Well, the girls from my class sure is excited about it. If only I had such immersion during my time...The following are those who will be going to the immersion!
Eden, Grace, Megan, Ferderico

Also we had our prefect investiture lately. Well I am so pleased that 6 pupils from my former class 3E have been elected PREFECTS! Congratulations to them! Well Done!!

My Former 3E pupils

Prefects in our Class 4E

Well I suppose "with greater powers, comes more responsibilities!". I am not exactly a discipline freak but I do have my expectations of my prefects. As for those who are keen to take on the role as prefects, I am watching! = )

Science Nova this coming Frion 28/03

Dear Parents,
This coming Friday would be the science nova day where pupils will get to have hands-on experience and get to carry out certain experiments. Not to worry this experiment will not be graded but more of a means to allow pupils to gain more experience in science.

This term is really a tight one and I urged everyone to work closely and submit their work on time alright. I am sure everyone in 4E can do much better than this. Some of your are not really up to standard yet.

Oh yah we are going to Kampong Glam on the 7th of April. Any parent volunteers? Please email me at low_kiah_wee@moe.edu.sg Have a great day everyone!

Welcome back to school as we celebrate Janel's Bday as well!

Welcome back everyone. It's going to be a bitter struggle term with SA1 in the 8th week. This term is really going to be a real tight one so may I invite everyone to tune yourself and get ready for the battle.

But for a start on the first day of school, let's celebrate Janel's birthday! She turns 10 on the first day of the 2nd term. Her birthday always falls during the holidays so this year is an exception. We allowed her to hold a mini celebration. I shall let the pictures do the talking!

The Birthday cake!

My EXCITED pupils

Mdm Leong and Janel's Mummy get excited too!

Oooo Ain't it Sweet!! Mummy and Daughter...

Parents, I want your opinions.

I have spend my lovely Saturday afternoon doing marking! While I must say that everyone had performed much better in this PBT test there is something that disturbs me pretty much.

I still find pupils not showing proper working despite numerous reminders in class. This means that quite a handful of pupils still use the top down approach and scribble their working all over the space provided. They did not use the left to right approach, writing line by line on how they arrive at the answer.

This time round, I still award working marks to the pupils but I am afraid in official exams I will have to follow strictly to the marking scheme. I know in some cases that other teachers do deduct some marks from pupils. The reason is that since it is a practice where marks are not recorded down, teachers want to allow pupils to understand the importance of showing proper working.

As such this results in some confusion, parents will wonder "Why this teacher never deduct marks while others do or why last time never deduct now in exams marks are deducted." Do your think that I should deduct marks even for practice to set things right from the start? Parents, I would like to hear from you. You can email me your feedback to Low_kiah_wee@moe.edu.sg

Thank you.

Mr Low Falls Sick......

Hello everyone. How was the PBT test today? Was it easy? I sure hope everyone can do much better than the mock paper. Bet your must be really happy right then I didn't come school these 2 days. I am down with fever and stomach flu in case your are wondering why I did not come to school these 2 days. Yucks had to eat all the plain porridge that my mum cooked (Make sure your don't tell my mum about her horrible porridge else she is going to come after me).

Well I miss everyone. Hope your did not give the relief teachers a tough time eh! Alright I am gonna get your PBT papers tomorrow to mark them . Please don't give me more heart attacks ah!!

See your on Monday! = )

Addressing all Parents!

Hope everyone is very familiar with the word PBT by now. By explaining more about PBT I hope that not so many parents will lose sleep over this PBT. = p So sorry for not being able to update the blog as frequent this week. Well I would like to give everyone a summary in case you are wondering how your child had fared based on his grades as well as how he/she fared as compared to his/her peers.

Basically the class did not do well with almost half the class scoring 30 marks or less. For the first time, pupils this year have to sit this problem based task as such they are not really comfortable with the questions. Instead of the usual "one answer only" problems, pupils now have to give all the POSSIBLE answers and as such they tend to overlook. For most pupils, you will observe that they did not do well in the areas where they are asked to list possible answers like the arrangement of chair and table combination, as well as questions asking them for their opinion like which is a better deal 10 or 11 chairs. This is very common amongst pupils at this level. So fret not! I am sure they will do better in this coming test on Friday.

As the schedule is very tight for me due to the upcoming Shanghai trip. This Friday's paper may only be returned to pupils when school reopen. As for those parents who wishes to view the paper, I am afraid this can be done only when school reopens. I am sorry for any inconveniences caused.

Amendments to the date of Problem Based Task

Dear Parents, the date of the actual problem based task should be on the 29th of Feb which is next Fri and NOT 1st of March. So sorry for the confusion caused. Ha ha I managed to sneak and take a few pictures of all my "Genius at work" while they took their mock PBT test today.
"What is the right Answer!!"

"Does anyone have a coin for to toss??"

"Genius at work!! Do not disturb!"

Test Date for PBT

Dear Parents,
Please kindly take note that the official test for the problem based task would be conducted on 1st of March. The actual test would be 1 hour and 45 minutes long. There will be a mock test some time this week and pupils will be allowed to bring the mock test paper back home. As I will be bringing pupils to Shanghai from the 5th till the 11th, I can only show the paper to those who wants to see when I am back. Any parents who are concern with the progress of your child and would like me to give you a call or meet in person, please feel free to email me. Thank you.

Best Rgds,
Mr Low

Problem Basked Task Test in week 9.

Dear Parents,

I would like to inform every that there will be a problem based task coming up in week 9. It would coincide with the upper primary CA (P5 & 6). The grades of this test will not be considered in the report card but just as a gauge of pupils' progress where problems based tasks is concern.

We will do a practice paper with pupils in week 8. ( the questions are from last year's test). For this coming test in week 9, pupils will not be allowed to bring the paper home but instead a copy of the rubrics which requires parents' signature will be given. The reason being that we might want to re-generate or modify the questions again. However if parents do wish to see the paper, please feel free to make an appointment with me. I would like to inform parents that they are only allowed to see the paper.

Please reinforce the following ideas which I have shared with the pupils in class.
1) Pupils are to do question by question as the questions are related to one another. E.g. they cannot do part C without getting the answer in part B.
2) There will be questions whereby there are more than one answers.
3) Unlike normal questions, problem based tasked usually has questions bounded by a few constrains. As such pupils have to consider ALL constrains carefully

Please feel free to clarify any doubts with me. Thank you.

On the 5th day of the new year

Welcome everyone back to school and hope everyone had a wonderful New Year over the past 4 days ( heh heh I am sure the pockets are full of red packets while Parents pockets just grew a little thinner.) Well for a start we had an opening speech coupled with the Lion Dance. The pupils were really well entertained.

Up next is the presentation of Mandarin Oranges to the Board of Directors. Well surprised to find many of my pupils over there.

Notice our new monitor badges?

That's Yu Keng at the back. His Dad was my professor in NTU and now I am his teacher. What a small world...

The rest of the P4 kids had Hui Chun at the courtyard. What a beautiful scenary to see so many pupils taking part in it and of course our very own pupils in their Lunar New Year customs taking part in the Hui Chun. Very lovely isn't it.

The following photo was taken during the Ai Xin Hong Bao. Every year we always take a little time off to think about the needy during the festive season. Well not everyone has a family to reutrn to. So it is a really good gesture to help the needy. Han Wei collected from the whole class and dropped the red packets into the sharity box.

And lastly Mdm Serene Leong would like to wish everyone a prosperous New Year.

Well on behalf of everyone from Nanyang Primary School, I would like to wish everyone a prosperous New Year! Since a picture says a thousand words, then I shall let the picture do the talking. = )

Well these are some of the websites that were shared amongest teachers during our level meeting. I find that some of your are weak in your multiplication or are not so farmilar with the multiplication table so why not spend a little time over the weekend to brush it up? = )

An old pupil from my Primary 3 class visited me at my desk today and gave me this.

Guess what this is!!! It's actually a sweet! Well my ex pupil Victoria Fam gave me this and they actually came in a pair.

However this other piggy is meant for her Form teacher. She made this during one of the food making class. Amazing isn't it how to simple gummy sweets can become such cute pigs. Too bad there wasn't such lessons back in my Primary School Days, else i did sign up for sure. Free sweets to eat you know.... Thanks Victoria!

Consolidation Time for science!!

I hope everyone had fun today during the science class. How come everyone is soooo excited that the water can "shoot" so far?? Ha ha but anyway I would like everyone to consolidate on the following points for science. Here is a simple summary so far.

Gas
  1. Can be compressed ( However there is a limit to how much it can be compressed. Remember i can only push the plunger but after awhile I can't anymore. )
  2. Does not have a fixed shape.
  3. Air is Matter.

Liquid

  1. Cannot be compressed (remember how hard i try to push the plunger but it refuse to bulge?).
  2. Takes the shape of the container (meaning if a certain amount of water is poured from one place to another, the amount of water remains the same but it will take the shape of the container.)
  3. Water is matter.

A little more courage!

We had some immersion pupils from India during the week and today was their last day. As such the presented a dance item to us after morning flag raising. I managed to capture some shots. I was really impressed by them as they were so natural and so good even though they had to perform in front of a thousand over kids.
During social studies lesson, I went into one of the class and asked who dare to do the same to either dance or sing and for a moment no one dared till one of them did. And here is the clip that had me impressed. I wonder if anyone in my class is brave enough to do it? Here is a little Singapore idol in the making.

Origami Contest.

The contestents!

Recently there is a craze in the class and that is folding origami. I am really amazed at how good my class is when it comes to doing origami. I was never good at origami. Each time i try, I only managed to follow the first few steps before becoming so lost at not knowing what should the next step be. Oh well...so I thought why not hold an origami contest for the kids. Rules were simple. They can come up with as many designs as they can but each design can only consist of a maximum of 2 pieces or origami paper. The contest was held during the kids 5 minutes break. And the winning entry came from Beatrice Yong with her Elephant!

And the winner is: The blue elephant proudly done by Beatrice! = )

The girl facing the camera on the right: Beatrice

She is really so good at origami isn't it. The elephant really looks sooooooo real! She took home with her a small packet of M&Ms. I am really so amazed with this girl for being so gracious. When I offered her 2 prizes (another lollipop) she politely decline and thank me profusely for the chocolates. Indeed a good example that I felt I really had to commend.
